@iLabAfrica, Prepares 100 Students for a Data-Driven World

Data science has evolved from being just a buzzword to a powerful force shaping our daily lives and how businesses operate. In today’s world, it is the force behind the way we shop, bank, and operate businesses. Imagine a situation where financial institutions can predict when a client is about to default, or even cancel their credit card before it happens.

Better yet, what if a single patient record data point could lead to a life-saving discovery? Imagine researchers using data to uncover hidden patterns, predict health outcomes, and even design breakthrough treatments. Yes, this is how far data analytics can take modern medicine.

At its core, data science is the art of turning raw information into meaningful insight. Using advanced algorithms and analytical techniques, it reveals trends, uncovers patterns, and drives informed decisions across every industry. It’s simply art.

On 16th April 2025, the @iLabAfrica Data Science Department proudly graduated over 100 students in three specialized certifications:

Each programme delivered a unique lens into the world of data, yet all shared a common goal: Equipping students with the tools to transform data into impact.

As the digital economy continuously grows, data-driven decision-making becomes a key driver of transformation across industries. The ability to collect, interpret, and apply data insights is no longer a niche capability — it’s crucial. To address this, institutions are investing in the next generation, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in a data-centric world.

“Data science is becoming an essential tool in business, healthcare, education, and beyond. We’re committed to meeting industry needs by continuously innovating and empowering young people with relevant, employable skills.” – Dr. Joseph Sevilla, Director at @iLabAfrica, emphasized.

“The certifications have equipped us with the skills to think creatively, critically analyze situations, and solve global challenges. We express gratitude to the trainers for simplifying complex ideas into comprehensible lessons, sparking curiosity, and motivating us to aim higher each passing day.” –  Frederick Shera, a graduate of CDAV and a Data Analyst at Quantico, expressed his journey.

From the classroom to the real world, these students didn’t just learn, they applied. Dennis Owuor presented his final project based on “The Relationship between Public Debt and Fiscal Policy,” inspired by Kenya’s current state of the economy. This was a reminder that data isn’t just numbers, but a tool that can be understood and shape the world we live in.

Others in attendance at the graduation ceremony were the Head of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Absa Bank, Timothy Kinyanjui, blending music and storytelling. He serenaded the audience with a violin as he shared his journey from aspiring data enthusiast to industry leader.

Closing off the ceremony was Jane Pamba, Data Science Trainer, uttering, “ As we leave the Strathmore University Institution, we leave here with values, skills, and knowledge that we will impart to the world.”
