Highlights from the Day
A Journey from Data to Intelligence

In his welcoming address, Dr. Sevilla, @iLabafrica Director – Strathmore University, reflected on the evolution of analytics to artificial intelligence:
“We have always done analytics. What has changed is the scale and speed. AI has made intelligence accessible to everyone — from the researcher to the receptionist.”
Dr. Sevilla highlighted the university’s pioneering role in developing Kenya’s first Master’s and Undergraduate programs in Data Science, noting that AI is no longer the domain of programmers alone, but a universal tool for every profession.
The Power of Purposeful AI

Dr. John Olukuru, Head of Data Science at @iLabAfrica, delivered a thought-provoking keynote on the practical use of AI to solve Africa’s most pressing challenges:
“Africa’s data story is rich — but it’s time we tell it with our own algorithms. Our future depends on how we use AI to empower communities, not just companies.”
He showcased real-world applications of AI in healthcare, agriculture, and climate innovation, underscoring the importance of context-aware innovation that reflects Africa’s realities and opportunities.
A Vision for Kenya’s Digital Future

Representing the government’s perspective, Mr. Nusu Manzi, Director of Research and Innovation at the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy, delivered a powerful call to action:
“Kenya’s digital transformation depends on trust — trust in our data systems, trust in our innovation, and trust that AI will serve the people, not the other way around.”
He outlined the government’s commitment to a National AI Strategy and emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration in building an inclusive, digitally empowered society.
