@iLabAfrica, Strathmore University’s Centre of Excellence in ICT Innovation and Development, celebrated the graduation of learners from its Executive Education Unit, marking the successful completion of the Software Development Course, AI Professional Programme and Digital Marketing Masterclass.
The graduation ceremony brought together over 120 professionals from diverse sectors, reflecting the growing demand for practical digital skills and lifelong learning in an increasingly technology-driven world. The programmes equipped participants with industry-relevant competencies through hands-on, project-based learning designed to address real-world challenges.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Lorna Mutegi, Executive Education Manager at @iLabAfrica, commended the graduates for their resilience and commitment to completing their learning journeys despite balancing careers, family responsibilities and other personal commitments.
“Today, we celebrate more than the completion of a course—we celebrate the power of finishing. Each one of you chose to start and more importantly, to finish. The ability to see something through to the end is evidence of resilience, discipline and growth and we encourage you to continue being lifelong learners and changemakers,” she said.
The event’s guest speaker, Peter Gikera, CTO and Co-founder of Tibu Health and an AI Engineer @iLabAfrica, challenged graduates to embrace artificial intelligence as an enabler of innovation and opportunity.
“You are graduating at a time when artificial intelligence is transforming industries and redefining work. By investing in these skills, you are already ahead of the curve. AI is a tool that amplifies human capability and those who understand how to use it responsibly and effectively will be the ones shaping the future,” he noted.
Peter, who began his own technology journey at @iLabAfrica, encouraged graduates to focus on building solutions that address real societal needs and to remain adaptable as technology continues to evolve.
The importance of practical application was also emphasized by Mrs. Melanie Hapisu, a trainer in the Digital Marketing Masterclass, who encouraged graduates to move beyond theory and actively implement the skills they had acquired.
“It’s not about what you’ve learned, but what you’re going to do with what you’ve learned. The projects you have completed are more than assignments—they are portfolios that demonstrate your abilities, whether you’re entering the workforce, growing a business, or advancing your career. The real world is here and implementation is what turns knowledge into impact,” she said.
Melanie also urged graduates to leverage the networks they had built during the programme, noting that collaboration and relationships often create opportunities for growth, innovation and business success.
Similarly, Mr. Kelvin Sankale -Software Development trainer, highlighted the interconnected nature of technology disciplines and the importance of responsible innovation.
“Success today is not simply about writing code or using technology; it begins with understanding the problems we want to solve and building solutions that create meaningful impact. Artificial intelligence is now part of every industry and we must use it purposefully, ethically and in ways that benefit society,” he remarked.
The graduates themselves reflected on the transformative nature of the programmes. Michael Nyakana, Chief Product Officer at Creditinfo and a participant in the AI Professional Programme, described the experience as both challenging and rewarding.
“Many of us came from different professional backgrounds and some had little or no coding experience. Despite demanding work schedules, we committed ourselves to learning and the experience has added tremendous value to our careers. We can only get better from here,” he said.
Similarly, Sami Mugambi, Regional Sales Manager at TCC Africa Limited and a participant in the Digital Marketing Masterclass, noted that the programme strengthened his professional capabilities and reinforced the value of continuous learning.
The graduation highlighted iLabAfrica’s commitment to equipping professionals with future-ready skills that support Kenya’s and Africa’s digital transformation agenda. By combining academic excellence with industry expertise, the Executive Education Unit continues to nurture a growing network of innovators, entrepreneurs, marketers and technology leaders who are creating meaningful impact across sectors.
As the graduates embark on the next phase of their professional journeys, they join a community of lifelong learners equipped to harness emerging technologies, solve real-world problems and contribute to sustainable development through innovation.
