Level 1 is the mandatory entry point into the @iLabAfrica IoT Programme. It introduces participants to the core building blocks of IoT:
- Electronics fundamentals
- Embedded systems
- Sensors
- Actuators, and Wireless communication protocols.
The course is entirely practical, with every concept reinforced through hands-on experimentation using real development boards and tools.
Most technology education today is software-focused, leaving a critical gap in electronics and hardware skills. Level 1 bridges this gap by giving participants real, practical experience with IoT architectures and development workflows, skills that are in high demand across industries in Kenya and across Africa.
This level is not optional; it forms the technical foundation on which all subsequent learning is built.
• Builds a strong foundational understanding of IoT systems from the ground up
• Introduces practical electronics, embedded programming, and sensor integration
• Covers wireless communication using MQTT and LoRaWAN
• Provides hands-on experience with real-time data dashboards using Node-RED
• Develops prototyping and problem-solving skills essential for any IoT work
• Prepares participants fully for Level 2
Upon completion of Level 1, participants are positioned for:
• Junior IoT Developer
• IoT Technician
• STEM Lab Assistant
• Smart Systems Support Technician
• Entry-Level Embedded Systems Developer
• Technical Innovation Assistant
This level also strengthens applications for internships, innovation challenges, and university projects in IoT and automation.
• Beginners with an interest in IoT and electronics, no experience required
• University students (Computer Science, Engineering, IT, BBIT, Mechatronics)
• High school graduates ready to begin a technical career
• Software developers looking to expand into hardware
• STEM educators and technical hobbyists
All sessions are offered in a hybrid format, combining in-person attendance at @iLabAfrica, Strathmore University (Nairobi) with live online participation for remote learners.
Classes run in the evening to accommodate both students and working professionals, with hands-on laboratory sessions, live demonstrations, and guided project work.
