Starting a business can feel like you’re navigating uncharted waters alone. The ups and downs, the uncertainties—it is easy to feel isolated. But what if you had a community of driven entrepreneurs to navigate those challenges with? That’s the magic of the Founders Connect Series! Held on the 2nd of August, 2024, at the Microsoft Auditorium, Strathmore University, this event, part of the Talent 4 Startups Programme, brought together over 80 founders to connect, share, and learn from one another.
The impact is real: mentored businesses see an 83% increase in revenue, and 71% of entrepreneurs with mentors report higher job satisfaction, according to a study by MicroMentor. Events like Founders Connect are not just gatherings—they are lifelines, offering the mentorship and community that can make all the difference in a founder’s journey.
This event was particularly significant as it showcased the collaboration between @iBizAfrica, Digital Africa, WYLDE International, and Startinev. The partnership with Digital Africa was a key part of the Founders Connect Series, showcasing the Talent 4 Startups Programme’s impact. This programme focuses on training tech and digital professionals across Africa. At the event, trainees from the programme connected directly with entrepreneurs, demonstrating how the programme helps bridge skills with real-world opportunities and supports a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The event kicked off with Dr. Joseph Sevilla from @iLabAfrica, who shared a clear picture of the startup scene today. He pointed out that while startups are full of fresh ideas and energy, they often struggle with securing funds, dealing with regulations, and finding the right connections. He emphasized that having a strong community and support network is essential for overcoming these challenges and helping startups succeed.
The highlight of the event was a panel discussion where entrepreneurs shared their real, unfiltered experiences, making the session both relatable and impactful. Moderated by Melanie Hapisu, founder of DigiPath Africa and a Standard Chartered Women in Tech Cohort 5 alumnus, the discussion provided valuable insights and fostered a meaningful exchange of ideas.
Here are some of the gems from the event:

2. Beyond Funding: Stephen Gatei, Founder of Mwalimu Connect, dropped a truth bomb that resonated with everyone. “It’s not just about the money; the key is identifying the problem and coming up with a solution. It’s more about self-belief than the idea itself,” he shared. In a world where funding often feels like the holy grail, his perspective was a refreshing change.
3. Value of Diverse Advisors: Flora Mutahi, CEO of Melvin Marsh Tea, emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives. “Your board of advisors should have skills you lack and always tell you the truth,” she advised. Honest feedback and varied expertise? That’s a recipe for success.
4. Living in the Present: Juliani from Nairobi Startup Week encouraged everyone to stay grounded. “I focus on NOW. Being present helps me see what I need to do for the future,” he said. It’s a reminder to seize the moment while planning ahead.
5. Belief in Your Vision: Tonee Ndungu of Kytabu inspired with his unwavering faith in his ideas. “Anything is possible if you believe, no matter the idea,” he declared. His conviction was contagious, motivating others to keep pushing forward.
